The number 60 is used to denote time, an hour 60 minutes, 60 seconds in a minute. The number 60 is first used by the Sumerians, so they're counting with base 60 or also known as Sexagesimal.
Reason why to use the number 60 is because this number is the smallest number that can be shared by six digits are: 1,2,3, 4 .5 .6.
So we can easily create: 1/2 hour = 30 min., 1/3 hours = 20 minutes, 1/4 hours = 15 minutes, etc. Imagine if one hour = 100 minutes, means 1/3 hours = 33,333 minutes? If people said, it's not sound.
If the word strings, 60 were highly composite number, a number, or the number dividers/factor much, IE 1,2,3, 4 .5 .6 .10, 12, 15,20,30,60.
Seconds
Minutes or seconds is a unit of time in the SI (international system, see SI units) which is defined as the duration of the period of time during the duration of radiation associated with the transition from two hyperfine levels of the ground state in a State of cesium-133 atom at a temperature of zero kelvins.
In the most common usage, one second is 1/60 of a minute, and 1/3600 of one hour.
Its history
In the beginning, the second term in the language of the United Kingdom is known as a "second minute" (minutes), which means a small part of an hour. The first part is known as a "prime minute" (minutes of Prime) with the same minute as it is known now.
